What our clients have to say
“Swell: simply the best”
I never write reviews, but feel compelled to do so, as I prepare to leave Swell after 15 days of bliss. My body is battered, but this place uplifts the soul like no other. Everybody connected with Swell is amazing. The surf instructors become real friends and interact with guests throughout. Genuine guys and so helpful. Haudy is great at organising everything. The cooks prepare the best, healthy and hearty food. The taxis to the beach get the party going. The security guys and cleaner are super friendly. Really impossible to pick a fault. Rooms are both clean and beautifully simple. Book the yoga too; Molly the yoga teacher is so much fun and keeps the classes challenging, but fun. I haven’t even mentioned the other guests….fabulous people throughout my stay, without exception. Will miss you Swell Surf Camp. Until next time….
“February in the Caribbean ~ and it only got better from there”
I had a wonderful time at Swell. The owners have done a great job designing the camp and the staff is all excellent at their jobs. Of course I loved the surfing and instruction (and all three instructors are great) but perhaps I most enjoyed chatting (or trying to) with Ramon as I drank my first cup of coffee in the morning. ‘Las cocineras’ were great, always cheerful and friendly and amazing cooks! Haudy, well, words can’t describe how special she is; just a joy to be around! I look forward to my next trip to Swell. Thank you.
Just got back from 6 days/5 nights at Swell. It’s the ideal place for beginner and intermediate surfers who want to improve/learn and have a stylish, comfortable place to hang out afterwards. Once I booked, Swell handled everything from beginning to end smoothly and flawlessly.
Their driver was waiting for me at the airport and drove me straight to the compound. Haudy, the manager, did the check-in which mostly consisted of handing over a key, introducing Dibbel the cat, sharing the wi-fi password, and pointing out the beer cooler. My room (and the entire facility) was exactly as pictured. Everything seemed brand new and in perfect condition. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, but with steady prevailing winds and a ceiling fan, I never thought of turning it on. The mattress and bedding were plenty comfortable, though I could have slept on a rock after the surf sessions. There are soap, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers in the shower for those who want to pack a littler lighter. And, the room has a safe for valuables, but the entire compound is always locked, secure, and staffed.
The compound is a 10 minute drive from the Encuentro Beach and the surf. The standard routine is to get up in time to drink some coffee and eat a banana (free and endless supply) for a 7AM ride to Encuentro. All you have to do is remember to toss your rash guard, booties and towel in the big baskets. Encuentro has a picturesque line of thatch roofed surf school/rental beach shacks. Swell sends beginners like me to the whitewash at Bobo’s, an old reef break, while intermediate surfers move further out to clean waves. More advanced surfers had dependable 4-6 foot waves on Derecho, the main break west of Bobo’s. The surf instructors – Neno (Dominican), Romy (German), Charlie (New Zealand), and Ed (UK) – run you through all the basics, safety, and warm-ups. They are super patient and helpful and great coaches both in and out of the water. After 9 or so, it’s back in the van to Swell for breakfast. And at 10:30, the van takes everyone back for a second session at Encuentro. I would get too tired and turn the second session into hammock reading time. When all the guests are willing, they will go at 6AM and combine the two sessions into one superset.
About that breakfast – it tastes extra good after a surf session. The breakfast spread always includes muesli, yogurt, fresh fruit and juice, crepes, and an omelet or breakfast wrap. Swell prepares breakfast every morning and dinner every other night. Cabarete offers plenty of lunch and off-night dinner options within easy walking distance of the Swell compound.
The instructors hang out and set a great vibe with the other guests. During my stay, there were clients from Denmark, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and Boston. I could always have as much or as little interaction as I wanted. Much of the off-water time was spend recuperating in the common areas. In addition to the pool table and foosball, there’s a massive dining table and a comfortable living room set up. While there is a television, it was never turned on during my stay. In the garden, there is a slack line, indo board, and two hammocks under the palms.
Surf, sand, and sun are a perfect combination made better by all the care and thought put in by the Swell crew. I couldn’t recommend it more highly!
